New Breed Marketing creates new name for Vermont Food Stamp program

For the past three months, New Breed Marketing of Winooski has been engaged in a re-branding and renaming of the Vermont Food Stamp program. On January 1st, 2009 the State of Vermont chose the name “3SquaresVT,” which focuses on three nutritious meals a day.

One challenge for the marketing team was to create a name that would help remove the stigma associated with food stamps and would emphasize nutrition. At a press conference Governor Jim Douglas said, “Calling the program by a more accurate name can help mitigate some of the embarrassment or stigma some applicants might associate with the program.”

New Breed Marketing set out goals to educate the community on the “phase-out” of the Food Stamp program name, breathe life into a fresh name, and create awareness about the expanded benefits for individuals and families.

The marketing company held interviews with the program’s stakeholders to learn about the program and generate ideas. During the process new names were created and a focus group was conducted to test and identify the best names. The top names, including the chosen “3SquaresVT,” were presented to the State.
